At the Immigration Counsels of Canada (ICC) we assist our clients with preparation of documents in various languages and their authentication and legalization in Canada (in some countries this process is known as “Apostilles“). Documents which are issued by the Canadian governmental or provincial entities (business, civil status, official documents) or documents that have been notarized in one of the Canadian provinces need to undergo the process of “authentication” and “legalization” before they can be valid and used as legal documents in a foreign jurisdiction.
Authentication of documents is done by the Department of Foreign Affairs and International Trade Canada (DFAIT), Authentication and Service of Documents Section (JLAC) or by the Ministry of Attorney General, Order in Council. After authentication, legalization of documents is undertaken at the Consulates of foreign countries in Canada. After this process, documents are considered to be legally valid in a certain country.
