Ottawa, June 17, 2013 — The appointment of a new Citizenship Judge for the Montréal area was announced today by Citizenship, Immigration and Multiculturalism Minister Jason Kenney. Andrea Paine will serve as a full-time Citizenship Judge for Montréal.
Ms. Paine, who is fluently bilingual, has worked in communications and policy development for both the federal and provincial governments, including the federal ministers of Health and CanNor as well as Canadian Heritage and Official Languages. She also held positions with the Quebec ministers of Education, Transport and Fisheries. After her studies at Concordia University and Université Laval, Ms. Paine volunteered for community organizations in Montréal’s West Island. She served as Director of Publicity for the West Island Women’s Centre, on the Board of Directors for the West Island Community Resource Centre and at her children’s school. Ms. Paine is also a published author, blogger, writer, volunteer and public speaker sharing her experiences about cancer survival and healthy living with a wide audience.
Citizenship judges are responsible for making decisions on citizenship applications, presiding over citizenship ceremonies and administering the oath of citizenship to new citizens.
Citizenship judges are appointed by the Governor in Council on the recommendation of the Minister of Citizenship, Immigration and Multiculturalism. New appointees are chosen from a list of qualified candidates who have gone through rigorous screening, including a written exam, reference check and oral interview. Candidates for citizenship judge appointments are evaluated against the skills required by the position: information-seeking, judgment/analytical thinking, decision making, effective communication, cross-cultural sensitivity, leadership, self-confidence, self-control and writing ability.
