Minister Kenney issues statement to celebrate Multiculturalism Day

“In my role as Minister of Citizenship, Immigration and Multiculturalism since 2008, I have had the great fortune of representing our country internationally on many different occasions. Without exception, I am always pleased to find deep respect and admiration for Canada’s long tradition of peaceful pluralism, social cohesion, and our legal system, which guarantees the constitutional protection of the ancient liberties and free customs of Canadians, including the fundamental rights of individuals.

“This year marks the 25th anniversary of the Canadian Multiculturalism Act. Today is an opportunity to celebrate one of the great strengths of Canadian society, and to recognize the contributions that people from so many different backgrounds have made in shaping our country.

“I am proud of Canada’s multiculturalism program for helping to nurture inter-faith and cross-cultural dialogue, ensuring that the history of Canada’s many communities is better understood, and fostering the better integration of newcomers by promoting core civic democratic values.

“As Minister of Citizenship, Immigration, and Multiculturalism, I join today with all Canadians in celebrating our country’s history of welcoming people from all over the world as equal and proud members of the Canadian family.”
