Chinese Canadians will be gathering with family and friends over the coming days to celebrate the start of a New Year, the most important of the traditional Chinese holidays. It is a time to recognize good fortune, and to welcome longevity and prosperity.
According to the Chinese Zodiac, each year is dedicated to a specific animal, and this year will mark the Year of the Dragon. It is believed the Year of the Dragon will be marked by excitement and exhilaration. Those born during this year are described as passionate, brave and self-assured.
For those of Chinese descent living in Canada and around the world, this holiday is a time to reflect on the past and look optimistically to the future.
For all Canadians, Chinese New Year provides an excellent opportunity to reflect on the tremendous contributions that members of the Chinese community have made to this country’s rich and diverse heritage.
As Minister of Citizenship, Immigration and Multiculturalism, I extend my best wishes to those celebrating Chinese New Year, and I hope the Year of the Dragon brings everyone health, happiness and prosperity.
