Minister Kenney issues statement recognizing the Republic Day of India

Ottawa, January 26, 2012 — The Honourable Jason Kenney, Minister of Citizenship, Immigration and Multiculturalism, issued the following statement recognizing the celebration of India’s Republic Day:

“January 26th commemorates one of the most significant days in India’s history. It was on this day in 1950 that the Constitution of India was enacted and the Republic was formed, marking an important step in the development of the Indian nation.

“Today, more than 60 years later, the celebration of Republic Day continues to be a source of pride for the people of India and a significant day for democracy in general. Republic Day brings together citizens of all backgrounds to commemorate the adoption of a truly democratic way of life – one that has strengthened India’s global position in the 21st century.

“This democratic tradition has also enriched our country. Canadians of Indian descent have played an important role in building our prosperous and pluralistic society, while taking great pride in their culture, heritage and traditions. Their contributions over the years have helped build the strong and diverse Canada we know today, and with India being among the top source countries for newcomers to our country, they will continue to help shape our national story.

“As Minister of Citizenship, Immigration and Multiculturalism, I am delighted to join with members of the more than one million-strong Indo-Canadian community in celebrating India’s Republic Day.”
