“Today, we join with Canada’s Polish community to mark the adoption of Poland’s constitution in 1791, an event of great pride for Poland and a major moment in the history of democracy.
“The 1791 Constitution is recognized as Europe’s first democratic constitution. It has long been a symbol of the Polish spirit of resilience and independence, even in the years of partition and Nazi and Soviet occupation when its celebration was banned.
“Constitution Day was deservedly restored as a national holiday after the fall of Communism, and continues as a day that celebrates the values of freedom, democracy and the rule of law, values that Canada shares with Poland.
“Today, there are over a million Canadians of Polish descent who have contributed to our diverse and prosperous country. They will be celebrating Constitution Day at events, parades, and festivities from coast to coast to coast.
“I encourage all Canadians to learn more about this landmark event, as well as to take part in community celebrations.”
