“This evening, the Jewish community in Canada and around the world will gather around the Seder table with family and friends to celebrate the holiday of Passover.
“One of the most sacred Jewish observances, this eight-day holiday marks the emancipation of Israelites from decades of slavery in Egypt. Throughout history, Jewish people around the world have drawn strength and inspiration from their ancestors’ exodus.
“One of the most significant rituals involves the avoidance of chametz (leaven). This is symbolic of the Jews’ swift departure from Egypt, when they did not have time to let their bread rise.
“Passover is a celebration of the Jewish people’s resilience throughout history, including in modern times, and their freedom to eventually return to their historic homeland of Israel.
“For all Canadians, Passover provides an opportunity to reflect on the many significant contributions that members of our strong Jewish community have made throughout our country’s history.
“As Minister for Multiculturalism, I wish all those celebrating a Chag Kasher v’sameach.”
