“I extend my best wishes to Canadians of Portuguese heritage who are celebrating Portugal Day at events and parades across Canada. Portugal Day commemorates the death of Luís de Camões, adventurer, poet, and author of Os Lusiadas, Portugal’s national poem.
“Canada’s ties with Portugal go as far back as the earliest days of our country, with the discovery and mapping of Labrador by Portuguese explorers in the fifteenth century.
“Our people-to-people links grew even stronger in the twentieth century when increasing numbers of Portuguese immigrants made Canada home. Today, Montreal and Toronto are home to thriving Portuguese communities that contribute to Canada’s economy and diversity. In fact, Toronto’s Portugal Day and Week celebrations are among the largest outside of Portugal with over 200,000 people participating.
“On this day I encourage all Canadians to learn about the vibrant Portuguese culture and history as well as the important contributions of Portuguese Canadians to our country.
“Feliz dia de Portugal.”
