Ottawa – April 15, 2012 – The Honourable Jason Kenney, Minister of Citizenship, Immigration and Multiculturalism issued the following statement marking the celebration of Orthodox and Oriental Easter:

I would like to give my best wishes to all Canadians who are celebrating Easter today in the Orthodox and Oriental traditions.

This weekend, families and friends will gather in worship to remember Christ’s death on the Cross and to reflect upon the meaning of sacrifice and redemption.

Easter is one of the most important holy days of the Christian calendar. It celebrates the Resurrection of Christ, giving all Christians the hope of Salvation and affirming the triumph of eternal life over death.

This Easter is also an opportunity for us all to reflect on the tremendous contributions that Orthodox and Oriental Christians have made to Canada’s rich and diverse heritage over the centuries.

On behalf of the Government of Canada, I extend my deepest wishes for a happy Easter.
