October 25, 2014 — Toronto — Toronto’s Asian and non-Asian communities got the chance to connect with each other culturally and socially this week at the Celebrate Our Mid Autumn Festival Together event thanks to Government of Canada funding, announced today by Parliamentary Secretary for Multiculturalism Chungsen Leung, Member of Parliament for Willowdale.
The Toronto Community Culture Centre received an investment of $10,427 for the event under Inter-Action, Canada’s multiculturalism grants and contributions program. Festivals like these help communities build a deeper understanding of one another.
The event included two workshops – on Oct. 18 and 19 – that allowed participants to learn more about traditional Asian foods, and included activities such as: paper lantern making, storytelling, and cultural games. It wrapped up on Oct. 25 at the China Town Centre with a final performance by several artists including: the Orient Dance Co., Multi-Cultural Folk Association of Canada and the Mandarin Youth Group, including Maria Li, Victoria Yu, Yin Shen and Mary Song.
Funding is provided under the Inter-Action program for events that:
- Support an integrated, socially cohesive society by building bridges to promote intercultural understanding; or
- Foster citizenship, civic memory, civic pride, and respect for core democratic values grounded in our history.
