Every year, on the second Monday in March, Canadians mark Commonwealth Day. It is a day to reflect on our country’s history, on the great endurance of our democratic institutions, and on our affection for – and allegiance to – Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II.
“Because it is the Diamond Jubilee Year of Her Majesty the Queen’s reign as Canada’s sovereign, this year’s Commonwealth Day is particularly special.
Our historical Commonwealth ties have provided Canada with many of the fundamental values that are at the foundation of our society, such as freedom, democracy, and the rule of law.
As Minister of Citizenship, Immigration and Multiculturalism, I am happy to celebrate Commonwealth Day with fellow Canadians and with people around the world.
