“On this day in 1821, Bishop Germanos of Patras raised the Greek flag in the Monastery of Agia Lavra, proclaiming independence from the Ottoman Empire.
“This proclamation came on the same day that the Greek Orthodox Church celebrates the Archangel Gabriel’s Annunciation to the Theotokos – the Virgin Mary. Because of this, the annual celebration of Greek Independence Day carries great cultural, national and religious significance for Canadians of Greek heritage and for people of Hellenic descent all over the world.
“Greek migration to Canada began over 150 years ago, and in the years since, Greek immigrants and their descendants have made significant contributions to the development and success of our country.
“Today, more than 250,000 Canadians proudly claim Greek ancestry, and many will participate in Independence Day parades, galas, and other celebrations across the country. Families across Canada gather to share in the traditional meal of Bakaliaros Skordalia – salt cod fritters with garlic and potato puree, and mark the happy occasion in the company of friends.
“Greek Independence Day is a great opportunity for Canadians of Hellenic descent to show pride in their history, and for all Canadians to share in the richness of the Greek community’s cultural heritage.
“As Minister for Multiculturalism, I offer my best wishes to everyone celebrating today.
“???? ? 25? ???????! Long Live the 25th of March!”
