“Today, Tamils in Canada, India, Sri Lanka and around the world celebrate the start of the four-day harvest festival of Thai Pongal, also known as the ‘Festival of the Tamils’. Celebrants traditionally give thanks for the sun, which provides a bountiful harvest. Each of the four days of the festival has its own particular significance and characteristic rituals associated with renewal, abundance, gratitude and family.
“Thai Pongal features many events of rich imagery and celebration, ranging from the ritual burning of old clothes and goods to symbolize a spirit of renewal to the preparation of a special meal which is shared with the animals that plough the land. Over the course of the four days, it is a time for friends to spend time together and for families to celebrate together.
“Over the past three decades, the Tamil-Canadian community has been one of the fastest growing communities in this country. In that time, Canadians of Tamil origin have made tremendous contributions to our diverse society.
“As Minister for Multiculturalism, I offer my warmest wishes to all those celebrating Thai Pongal.
“Thai Piranthal Vali Pirakkum.”
