Minister Kenney issues statement to recognize Chanukah

Today, families and friends will gather together at sundown to celebrate the first night of Chanukah, the Jewish Festival of Lights.

This eight-day holiday commemorates the rededication of the Holy Temple, and the triumph of the Jewish people, led by the heroic Maccabees, against tyranny and oppression more than two thousand years ago.

Chanukah is observed by the nightly lighting of the Menorah, symbolizing the victory of light over darkness and the miracle of the undefiled oil that miraculously burned for eight days following the liberation of the Temple. It is a time of joyous family gatherings, gift exchanges, and enjoyment of traditional songs, games and food.

All Canadians are encouraged to use this time to reflect on the importance of faith, tradition and freedom, and to recognize the exceptional contributions members of the Jewish community have made to Canada’s development as a strong, diverse, and democratic nation.

As Minister for Multiculturalism, I wish everyone celebrating Chanukah, here in Canada and around the world, a Chag Chanuka Sameach.
