Minister Kenney issues statement to recognize Eid al-Adha

“Today at sundown, Muslims in Canada and around the world will celebrate one of the most important holidays in Islam.

“Eid al-Ahda, also known as the Feast of the Sacrifice, is held for four days during the month of Dhul Hijja. During this month, Muslims undertake the Hajj – the pilgrimage to Mecca that all able-bodied Muslims who can afford to do so must perform at least once in their lifetime.

“Muslims who are not performing the Hajj are encouraged to attend congregational prayers in the morning. For many Muslims, the four days of Eid-al Adha celebrations will also include making charitable donations, visiting friends and family, exchanging gifts and enjoying festive meals.

“This weekend, I encourage all Canadians to reflect on the many contributions that Canadian Muslims have made to our country.

“As the Minister for Multiculturalism, I extend my best wishes for a happy Eid al-Adha to all Canadian Muslims.

“Eid Mubarak.”
