Minister Kenney issues statement to recognize Holi

Ottawa, March 27, 2013 — The Honourable Jason Kenney, Minister of Citizenship, Immigration and Multiculturalism, issued the following statement to recognize Holi:

“As Canadians across the country say farewell to winter, many will officially celebrate the beginning of spring today during the Hindu festival of Holi.

“This centuries-old tradition is celebrated at the end of winter, on the last full moon of the lunar month. It was originally celebrated as an agricultural festival in India, to celebrate a bountiful harvest in the coming season through rituals like the Festival of Colours.

“Holi’s message of peace and friendship can serve to strengthen our diverse country, as Canadians from various backgrounds partake in today’s festivities.

“As Minister of Citizenship, Immigration and Multiculturalism, I extend my best wishes to all those celebrating Holi today.
