Ottawa, March 20, 2013 —The Honourable Jason Kenney, Minister of Citizenship, Immigration and Multiculturalism, issued the following statement to recognize the celebration of Nowruz, the Persian New Year:
“Today is Nowruz, an important holiday marking the first day of spring and the beginning of a new year according to the Persian calendar.
“This is an opportunity to reflect on the ancient cultural and spiritual roots of the Persian community. It is also an excellent opportunity for families to gather to celebrate a tradition of great dignity.
“I would like to thank all Canadians of Persian background for their enormous contribution to building the successful, prosperous and democratic society that is Canada. We are also mindful of all those who are celebrating Nowruz in Iran and do not enjoy their freedoms. We hope that one day soon, they will.
“As Minister of Citizenship, Immigration and Multiculturalism, I extend my best wishes for a healthy and happy Nowruz to everyone celebrating today.”
