“Every February, Canadians mark Black History Month, an important annual celebration of the accomplishments of Canadians who trace their family heritage to Africa and the Caribbean.
“The proud legacy of black Canadians goes back to the early beginnings of Canadian history. The great sacrifices and tremendous contributions of their community have helped to create the Canada of today.
“This year, as we celebrate the Year of Sport in Canada and look ahead to hosting the Toronto 2015 Pan American Games, we recognize the great achievements of black athletes in Canadian history, including 2012 Olympic medallist for Soccer Candace Chapman, baseball Hall of Famer Ferguson Jenkins and Hockey great Willie O’Ree, the first black player in the NHL.
“We also pay tribute to a great Canadian this year, Lincoln Alexander. Just recently, Canada honoured the first black Member of Parliament, minister and Lieutenant-Governor of Ontario by creating Lincoln Alexander Day.
