“Almost 50 years ago, March 21 was designated as the International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination.
“Canada remains committed to combatting racial discrimination in all its forms. We stand with those who fight to end hatred and bigotry throughout the world.
“Whenever we see manifestations of racism in Canada, we must act together to condemn them. Through our Multiculturalism program and our support for such institutions as the Canadian Race Relations Foundation, we are promoting the most effective antidote to racism, which is to break down solitudes which can often lead to prejudice.
“Through our religious, cultural, and ethnic differences, Canadians continue to be united in our shared values of freedom, democracy, and the rule of law, and take pride in the success of our peaceful pluralism.
“Canada has also played a key role in combatting racism abroad, such as our leadership in opposing South Africa’s apartheid system.
“As the Minister for Multiculturalism, I encourage all Canadians to embrace one of our country’s greatest strengths—our unity in diversity, and to promote the values that have allowed our peaceable democracy to flourish.”
