Ottawa – April 13, 2012 – The Honourable Jason Kenney, Minister of Citizenship, Immigration and Multiculturalism, issued the following statement recognizing the celebration of Vaisakhi:
“Today, Sikhs in Canada and around the world will celebrate Vaisakhi. On this day in 1699, Guru Gobind Singh Ji founded what has become today’s vibrant Sikh community.
Canada’s Sikh community organizes some of the biggest Vaisakhi celebrations outside of Punjab. Observances at gurdwaras and the reading of sacred texts are the focal points of celebrations, along with parades and processions – known as Nagar Kirtans – through cities and towns. I look forward to taking part in these celebrations across Canada in the coming weeks, including on Parliament Hill.
“For all Canadians, Vaisakhi provides an excellent opportunity to reflect on the tremendous contributions that Sikhs have made to this country’s rich and diverse heritage.
“As Minister of Citizenship, Immigration and Multiculturalism, I offer my best wishes to all those celebrating Vaisakhi.”
