Minister Kenney issues statement to recognize Commonwealth Day

Ottawa, March 11, 2013 — The Honourable Jason Kenney, Minister of Citizenship, Immigration and Multiculturalism, issued the following statement on Commonwealth Day:

“Today, Canadians join 2 billion people from 54 countries – as we reflect on our proud heritage as a founding member of the Commonwealth and our allegiance to Her Majesty, Queen Elizabeth II. Commonwealth Day celebrates the tremendous diversity we have inherited from the British Empire, which is the historic source of Canada’s traditions of peaceful pluralism and ordered liberty.”

“As a symbol of our membership and allegiance, the Royal Union Flag will be flown alongside our national flag today at federal establishments, airports, and military bases across the country.

“Today is also an excellent opportunity to reflect on the tremendous contributions made to our country by those who can trace their roots to other Commonwealth nations.

“As Minister of Citizenship, Immigration and Multiculturalism, I am delighted and honoured to celebrate Commonwealth Day with Canadians and our fellow Commonwealth members.”
